<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
it needs dyed. Ive tried a bunch of dyes over the years and the best bank for buck is......</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
cheap, effective easy to find in the supermarket and comes with a handy applicator.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
don't get it on any surfaces that need to be glued though......</div>

Bridgework......</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
basically, back to the belt sander and shape things......</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Can you use a sander to carve?</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
yes!</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
a straight edge..... yes, it's the aluminium frame from a velux window blind. Laying on the frets it gives a good idea of the height that the saddle will need to be......</div>

Bridgework.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My first attempt at precision stuff since I retired from teaching technology and had to give up access to all those lovely big tools.......</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So, cutting the slot for the saddle, rather than a milling machine weighing in at about 2 tonnes, I dug out the plunge router attachment for my Dremel. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The bridge is going to be thin. like electric guitar thin, so I'm using an ebony fingerboard blank. (I sell these on eBay..... Have a look!)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
To get the incline for the slot, I've clamped another fingerboard blank alongside at a slight angle. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlrVolN7UgDIB42j1t-R8LMUV2KEJE_ZLkPsT1OoSAdWBhAm_2JeS_RLzflYUSXu7-69R23KFl2L1Z6byWj0HJIN9jsMVXEgqDBOa4j8vypeG968yDgM79JN8gZDyVIgd7FbMFpg/s1600/DSCF7162.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlrVolN7UgDIB42j1t-R8LMUV2KEJE_ZLkPsT1OoSAdWBhAm_2JeS_RLzflYUSXu7-69R23KFl2L1Z6byWj0HJIN9jsMVXEgqDBOa4j8vypeG968yDgM79JN8gZDyVIgd7FbMFpg/s320/DSCF7162.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
First pass at about 2mm deep. so far, so good.........</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinO_GFgOAJG5KSHlWkeVUYC1i0LbxNVU4Wj-Ex17UKT9FVG3jr96_an7fX_quOEXvGVYJs5qt8H-YW_MVIXyCNkIKXoM8_muTVGKZINRWgtYzv8PGiQyMr3dvdXs3b7TS-ok4Y8w/s1600/DSCF7163.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinO_GFgOAJG5KSHlWkeVUYC1i0LbxNVU4Wj-Ex17UKT9FVG3jr96_an7fX_quOEXvGVYJs5qt8H-YW_MVIXyCNkIKXoM8_muTVGKZINRWgtYzv8PGiQyMr3dvdXs3b7TS-ok4Y8w/s320/DSCF7163.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Of course, before cutting double check depths etc so the cutter doesn't go right through.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And check that the cutter is tight in the chuck so it doesn't wander downwards.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
See the slot to the left? that's what happened there! Thankfully a fingerboard is really big in comparison with the bridge I want so I moved a couple of cm in and started again. Pic shows drilling the string guide holes. </div>
<br />

No, of course not. I haven't got the patience (or the skills) for perfect, but even with a clearly "done at home" paint job, its still a lot prettier than the vile pink colour that it was originally!</div>

It added to and filled out the sound nicely and I thought...... How hard can it be?<br />
<br />
Well, not hard at all!<br />
<br />
I had a rummage in my scraps box and got all the parts required to build this for free. if you were BUYING the parts? realistically, still under a fiver!<br />
<br />
The case is a box that came with miniature bottles of port. I took out the separators and cut the string handle.......<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi54DnkbzhC-wSnnttXBa9jYXd74_ONNlLfK1ElNI_ocoVjGNnGRzn4q9QPBVRW8O7_r8fnzMcQTdLnn6qvAHZHzLqYfJldekt1i6PFzreBFc2qIUuoVeW2YQA_7u7tkiiWOMyKLQ/s1600/DSCF7121.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi54DnkbzhC-wSnnttXBa9jYXd74_ONNlLfK1ElNI_ocoVjGNnGRzn4q9QPBVRW8O7_r8fnzMcQTdLnn6qvAHZHzLqYfJldekt1i6PFzreBFc2qIUuoVeW2YQA_7u7tkiiWOMyKLQ/s640/DSCF7121.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGDFQ30_l7MrbcXJPtskeFGTuqT2LV_knqpsfNMWWNCLMTVbBWVQi1X0EYi-S7gubrlsGh5ebSACGKZZ9YvElr2zjU5aIX7pm7F5o2yzf16xGQdKSRQujD6KFAvsU4yCmaPWwynQ/s1600/DSCF7123.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGDFQ30_l7MrbcXJPtskeFGTuqT2LV_knqpsfNMWWNCLMTVbBWVQi1X0EYi-S7gubrlsGh5ebSACGKZZ9YvElr2zjU5aIX7pm7F5o2yzf16xGQdKSRQujD6KFAvsU4yCmaPWwynQ/s640/DSCF7123.JPG" width="640" /></a><br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Now and first, I was going to go with three piezo discs because that's what I had. Pointless, so I went with two.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDu8fiZDNkNNwllyONdIVtpRu2muHHGmYNG-mZ0QsuSHQNaBJrx34vgudS-4PY5Q4XnOuGdyiLGfy3xcj6ypWf1cWghhlv97zdXW6hziHqUs9o0ioMnW_Jj_pMwb41kfnwFpB65A/s1600/DSCF7122.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDu8fiZDNkNNwllyONdIVtpRu2muHHGmYNG-mZ0QsuSHQNaBJrx34vgudS-4PY5Q4XnOuGdyiLGfy3xcj6ypWf1cWghhlv97zdXW6hziHqUs9o0ioMnW_Jj_pMwb41kfnwFpB65A/s640/DSCF7122.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaOKUb3akqP_uMn0cmyg3N_-ZuzbQzioNG7Tfg9IxevRr37VwB2wOCW5cUReYA91TEitm1ysTrFdr2bBQykuEirkmh3c6IkWtlgAVJM-9nDaUGKBEq2Po8gt3MJoKUkCwfDN7oig/s1600/DSCF7124.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaOKUb3akqP_uMn0cmyg3N_-ZuzbQzioNG7Tfg9IxevRr37VwB2wOCW5cUReYA91TEitm1ysTrFdr2bBQykuEirkmh3c6IkWtlgAVJM-9nDaUGKBEq2Po8gt3MJoKUkCwfDN7oig/s640/DSCF7124.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
In the end, I used two. The biggest and smallest, passing the signal through a pot each, then to a shared jack. Superglued the discs to the inside face of the box, and its done!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCpu0P3CgQ64T8_ujjLVOaGMc1YnY_unPeiES9hF9s1a1EfSDt0PM_0HAquB971fZ1PMIKbn7FVrEo3R9hGJawj5YuS1a-U-RVi0a2u6B_WhiMFVu_QgibQQSny7Fm4JscYtReMw/s1600/DSCF7125.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCpu0P3CgQ64T8_ujjLVOaGMc1YnY_unPeiES9hF9s1a1EfSDt0PM_0HAquB971fZ1PMIKbn7FVrEo3R9hGJawj5YuS1a-U-RVi0a2u6B_WhiMFVu_QgibQQSny7Fm4JscYtReMw/s640/DSCF7125.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Honestly, no need at all for the pots. The piezos could have easily been wired straight to the socket.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So now that the prototype works, I need to scavenge some nice hardwood!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKK-4209DwWaDBn1x0ZJ3mBCVo0eYgjJj6xmDgDOFsrh81-St_IG3TpfxeHISqxwIHDUGlKDKSguLAJ_Oj9LzAlpFfbM7Tau8rrRxfe4eTZg96ZgHCxoCg8GRyde11GirNqimNUQ/s1600/DSCF7113.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKK-4209DwWaDBn1x0ZJ3mBCVo0eYgjJj6xmDgDOFsrh81-St_IG3TpfxeHISqxwIHDUGlKDKSguLAJ_Oj9LzAlpFfbM7Tau8rrRxfe4eTZg96ZgHCxoCg8GRyde11GirNqimNUQ/s320/DSCF7113.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3hYDBMbhrDLiQyrY8SZXBtZ6YWq1r4ByYeJR7j4mi0dX6D-fSWVlm7-DdE10MiH4-_afCmxOHBvqx094_XVP3TPlYwjKsxE3qiKdOfkANEx5MKEGnJsXQYxwmM1MtBqzReWu4-w/s1600/DSCF7114.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3hYDBMbhrDLiQyrY8SZXBtZ6YWq1r4ByYeJR7j4mi0dX6D-fSWVlm7-DdE10MiH4-_afCmxOHBvqx094_XVP3TPlYwjKsxE3qiKdOfkANEx5MKEGnJsXQYxwmM1MtBqzReWu4-w/s320/DSCF7114.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
but, when I fitted the string guide, using the pre-existing hole, the screw snapped.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Oh.... dearie me!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
so I tried to get a grip with pliers, but no luck, so the trusty Dremel took it down to below flush.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
another screw will hold it......</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
its not an airtight, perfect fit, which is fine. there will be filler around the maple and then depending of if it works, either a sunburst leaving the centre of the maple clear, or if it turns out that a sunburst is beyond me (likely!) then solid colour covering the joins and filler.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
and then bring it all down to the depth of the pickup routs, leaving a shelf all round for gluing.... and a pleasant surprise.... its not chipboard after all, what LOOKED like chipboard was the butchery done by a previous owner to fit the HB pickup.....</div>

then glue and a bunch of clamps.</div>

One wee thing...... On the net, I often see folks doing carpentry and guitar building indoors.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
these folk are obviously single.</div>

The mess produced by routing out this tiny space is spectacular! definitely an outdoors job</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Template made for the maple top. It needs to cover all the existing routing, and not spill over any of the curved edges or the chamfered top edge....... And I've filled the screw holes.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMU8efQ2oXeKwIGRL6zKk6sMcUWIrOp_lMhDYjLupPcgC52i0MeBpBPAXM9JfYovAdnwtvqNV8KVg0Mvol-JjKL4XpxZPPf-QKjtXuz__pBzUunntnaypC539ZvCBPkFEHrQeCPg/s1600/DSCF7089.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMU8efQ2oXeKwIGRL6zKk6sMcUWIrOp_lMhDYjLupPcgC52i0MeBpBPAXM9JfYovAdnwtvqNV8KVg0Mvol-JjKL4XpxZPPf-QKjtXuz__pBzUunntnaypC539ZvCBPkFEHrQeCPg/s320/DSCF7089.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Maple top now the glue is dry and the sanding starts to get the saw burn off. maple is full of sugar (maple syrup, remember?) so it is really prone to blackening under sawing......<br />
<br />
There is a nice bit of figure in this wood, so I MAY try a sunburst on this thing, leaving the centre of the top uncovered and the back, and edges black. Maybe!<br />

<br />
New winter, new project.<br />
<br />
Strat......<br />
<br />
but acoustic.<br />
<br />
loose the electrics and replace the scratchplate with a solid front and a regular acoustic bridge with a piezo underneath.<br />
<br />
still plays like a strat, but sounds like an acoustic.<br />
<br />
So start by buying an encore strat. I LOVE encores. I've had one since 1988 and I prefer the neck to anything squier have ever done, so it makes sense to start there.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRgyZU78ETFtUle6_h6PEsa7fUbaFH00CvroCd4Kqe0fj49giZXc366HZTqQciHbZT8Si1B5CQ_nSX1iJA9xh2fK-ixUZTfDn1SxxvkspkH4IzBDxs2FN000iRkM_UDN_uQDR7jA/s1600/DSCF7059.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRgyZU78ETFtUle6_h6PEsa7fUbaFH00CvroCd4Kqe0fj49giZXc366HZTqQciHbZT8Si1B5CQ_nSX1iJA9xh2fK-ixUZTfDn1SxxvkspkH4IzBDxs2FN000iRkM_UDN_uQDR7jA/s320/DSCF7059.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Vile, isn't it!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
well, it won't be pink for long......</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A surprise when I dismantled it was the chipboard.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhToz5A5n1mbn1D0RJ72U1qomsJSrsFm_iKAqQJEmcwilGEzrJ5E0-I2Wdx7vVJl9wEz8HneWaI5bRr75m_qkbUj5XC3OanKqjjFkP9KOL1A9TaB2bmFscTJ-nlY1SiU_dyj5Ykwg/s1600/DSCF7082.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhToz5A5n1mbn1D0RJ72U1qomsJSrsFm_iKAqQJEmcwilGEzrJ5E0-I2Wdx7vVJl9wEz8HneWaI5bRr75m_qkbUj5XC3OanKqjjFkP9KOL1A9TaB2bmFscTJ-nlY1SiU_dyj5Ykwg/s320/DSCF7082.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Routing will tell how much of this actually is chipboard as the neck pocket is real wood......</div>

<br /></div>
lets release the grain from under that paint on the headstock..... So far so good!<br />
<br />
and I was pleasantly surprised to find that the neck was virtually untouched. no fret wear at all. One less job to do later. Yay!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitc62lU-7zFDSEI6dRc8tQWpxaDgs7sJwoJUnE5jsIi-OdkUnnLgvIleHsr15fHftVLjHJU9rZHfv-5Jy8hSRgsdassomuxOtUrZB8f0uCLVi0D6ygtO_-WLym6FI8nTDwQixEig/s1600/DSCF7080.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitc62lU-7zFDSEI6dRc8tQWpxaDgs7sJwoJUnE5jsIi-OdkUnnLgvIleHsr15fHftVLjHJU9rZHfv-5Jy8hSRgsdassomuxOtUrZB8f0uCLVi0D6ygtO_-WLym6FI8nTDwQixEig/s320/DSCF7080.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Now, discovering that there is chipboard in the body sets me off on another track. I WAS going to put a spruce top on there, but now..... hardwood. Gibson used maple on their acoustic Les Pauls and I have some maple in the shed.....<br />
<br />
This was cut and stashed away with the intention to make mandolins some day in the future, so I'll be using this as the top......<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
OK just in case you have found this through google to see how to paint a guitar rather than following the full blog......<br />
<br />
I bought this bass for pennies, as a winter project.<br />
<br />
The body was broken and badly glued. Too much hassle to break and re-glue it, so lots of filler and sanding.....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjK6v1_94KAAtfDR0z-2N9sztW_F32qGk-5KsKJyFKQP0ntRATxwS0ol5M2ssqWQrTXxnUsK3HIN-U6YNQXnFE_wNnhDt1fb8GGbboJuxnM-KOrnkCIzPDS5FegpDsuO9Ae5TIqAA/s1600/s-l1600.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjK6v1_94KAAtfDR0z-2N9sztW_F32qGk-5KsKJyFKQP0ntRATxwS0ol5M2ssqWQrTXxnUsK3HIN-U6YNQXnFE_wNnhDt1fb8GGbboJuxnM-KOrnkCIzPDS5FegpDsuO9Ae5TIqAA/s320/s-l1600.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So, filled and sanded.....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhx34r_MicT-8z5y-RRYwFglnjU-t9pG5R5pBqJwFDy9TOQWB0KPdnPUxV1bcNhtPeb216a-hY8q3mlqmrslr2WyT-V1BxXABgUlLpK7fpirUTo5TNzl_-1LXOE2crj4roCw5XEyQ/s1600/DSCF6926.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhx34r_MicT-8z5y-RRYwFglnjU-t9pG5R5pBqJwFDy9TOQWB0KPdnPUxV1bcNhtPeb216a-hY8q3mlqmrslr2WyT-V1BxXABgUlLpK7fpirUTo5TNzl_-1LXOE2crj4roCw5XEyQ/s320/DSCF6926.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMcEIIP-u7EvClKM9cAPNtNJZ50n2VTeWxZSIjWvflX-rGbUJ8fKHPGqNpP0wI79DOW5DIscBiYxo2l_4OJh8ClfRneky_lnj1cl-EM2rDj5ukhIOELH_5Wz7-A6V1LjzTpUg4FA/s1600/DSCF6928.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMcEIIP-u7EvClKM9cAPNtNJZ50n2VTeWxZSIjWvflX-rGbUJ8fKHPGqNpP0wI79DOW5DIscBiYxo2l_4OJh8ClfRneky_lnj1cl-EM2rDj5ukhIOELH_5Wz7-A6V1LjzTpUg4FA/s320/DSCF6928.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
On the advice of the guy in the motor factors, all paint is water based nowadays, so in his words, paint is paint. No need to match brands.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
One thing. Paint is sensitive to humidity. Spraying on a damp cloudy day runs the risk of cloudy finish.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So... several coats of primer..... Better to do 4 light coats than one thick runny one....... At this point I can see that the fill line is still visible. If I was doing this as my job, yes, I'd go back at this point and sand some more. but sod it, it'll do!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
OK, from day one, the frankly nasty Legend logo was going.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4Gy4M_DhHlBMDgA8YDfTCDuOmwAwiswgan-qh5_6FP3l72GZpL4SkxxoRnBNgS7GTgnqQ0TH7g2mHiwAW3w8OFTEYInB-JBzVL1Th-yQA_MOU6dMmdDr6QIg9wiFl7n9MgkiFFA/s1600/DSCF6904.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4Gy4M_DhHlBMDgA8YDfTCDuOmwAwiswgan-qh5_6FP3l72GZpL4SkxxoRnBNgS7GTgnqQ0TH7g2mHiwAW3w8OFTEYInB-JBzVL1Th-yQA_MOU6dMmdDr6QIg9wiFl7n9MgkiFFA/s320/DSCF6904.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
from that.....</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
a little wet and dry paper gives us....</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFSB3WllmtaC4HIUCNx2jnV23ztvuYGZXhImrMuKukn2DCuzstNu8u-ujLYBPV_nZvkgqHZnJPYuXRo1XU_KVM0cUXdmX5Ys1soethZGO8EPanxhSWm6IspjiHiamB1sEl334dhQ/s1600/DSCF6905.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFSB3WllmtaC4HIUCNx2jnV23ztvuYGZXhImrMuKukn2DCuzstNu8u-ujLYBPV_nZvkgqHZnJPYuXRo1XU_KVM0cUXdmX5Ys1soethZGO8EPanxhSWm6IspjiHiamB1sEl334dhQ/s320/DSCF6905.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
the legend logo still visible........</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
then onto the PC and download a font called Strato ..... credit where it's due..... <a href="https://fontlibrary.org/en/font/strato">https://fontlibrary.org/en/font/strato</a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
then load up Publisher and tinker around a little.....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEgIEwy_SbzPC_SIRM3hsQEbgUJWuN0LdLJwIr0oFZtmK6iwWQyru4k5tuXhDm-k22pjJICwf0oFMDV8IclOckVdrcssMrfMiRFcWInCI3rsHjRQLkXfAP6zHs7FmSwRewGt0Dew/s1600/DSCF6946.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEgIEwy_SbzPC_SIRM3hsQEbgUJWuN0LdLJwIr0oFZtmK6iwWQyru4k5tuXhDm-k22pjJICwf0oFMDV8IclOckVdrcssMrfMiRFcWInCI3rsHjRQLkXfAP6zHs7FmSwRewGt0Dew/s320/DSCF6946.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
then print onto clear waterslide decal paper.....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
soak it for 30 seconds and slide it into place.....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<br />
for a reason!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvCXb0QqnKWOPp6kGWDPxESTuWfN2WSY8K_cPMWQCAaKE8QcMn3_usT5yd1n3fYWNN4R12rRVuFyllFJ82qw2Nwk5V31a_fcGUn-BIlJIHkkIR-2Ilf2g3OpUSsg9KIlnDaMy8HQ/s1600/s-l1600.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvCXb0QqnKWOPp6kGWDPxESTuWfN2WSY8K_cPMWQCAaKE8QcMn3_usT5yd1n3fYWNN4R12rRVuFyllFJ82qw2Nwk5V31a_fcGUn-BIlJIHkkIR-2Ilf2g3OpUSsg9KIlnDaMy8HQ/s320/s-l1600.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Where the tape is tastefully wrapped around the body is a break...... which has been repaired quite badly....... so there are gaps that will need to be filled.</div>

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
and there are a few scuffs that you'd expect on a cheap old bass! </div>

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
On taking the scratchplate off, I discovered that the reason the bridge pickup wont work is because both wires are off.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Not the end of the world.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The neck is straight (but the fingerboard is really dirty) so this will really be 90% fill, sand and spray. before re-assembling.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So, on removing the neck I see MAY 98 which makes it 20 years old. There is a very minor ding on the back of the neck, so it can be left alone.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The headstock and tuners are fine, apart from that Logo.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now, I'm NOT going to try to pass it off as anything it isn't, but "Legend" has to go.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Two minutes with fine wet and dry sandpaper......</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Legend is still just visible, but when I get my new waterslide decal made up it'll be a lot prettier.</div>
<br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
a ruler, couple of pencils, a hacksaw blade and some sandpaper.<br />
<br />
the following pics are taken from several different instruments, but they show the process! <br />
<br />
click on a pic to enlarge.<br />
<br />
cut & file it to the right length<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e328/gowanedwards/40-49/43%20colin/40600998-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e328/gowanedwards/40-49/43%20colin/40600998-1.jpg" height="240" width="320"></a></div>
<br />
<br />
then make a pencil like this......(I lean it onto the sander)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e328/gowanedwards/40-49/43%20colin/40600999-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e328/gowanedwards/40-49/43%20colin/40600999-1.jpg" height="240" width="320"></a></div>
<br />
<br />
so that you can mark where the top of a zero fret WOULD be<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e328/gowanedwards/40-49/43%20colin/40601000.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e328/gowanedwards/40-49/43%20colin/40601000.jpg" height="240" width="320"></a></div>
<br />
<br />
then shape the top of the nut down to about 1.5mm above that line.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e328/gowanedwards/40-49/43%20colin/40601002-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e328/gowanedwards/40-49/43%20colin/40601002-1.jpg" height="240" width="320"></a></div>
<br />
now mark where your slots will be.....<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e328/gowanedwards/40-49/43%20colin/40601003-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e328/gowanedwards/40-49/43%20colin/40601003-1.jpg" height="240" width="320"></a></div>
<br />
<br />
and cut them. DON'T go down to the line.<br />
<br />
I use a bandsaw for the initial cuts, but a hacksaw does the job just fine.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e328/gowanedwards/40-49/43%20colin/40601004.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e328/gowanedwards/40-49/43%20colin/40601004.jpg" height="240" width="320"></a></div>
<br />
glue it in (a couple of drops of CA (superglue))<br />
<br />
then string her up...<br />
<br />
(the eagle eyed among you will spot that this is now a bouzouki & not the guitar that I started, but live with it, OK!!!!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e328/gowanedwards/40-49/43%20colin/40601006.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e328/gowanedwards/40-49/43%20colin/40601006.jpg" height="240" width="320"></a></div>
<a href="http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e328/gowanedwards/40-49/43%20colin/40601007.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e328/gowanedwards/40-49/43%20colin/40601007.jpg" height="240" width="320"></a><br />
<span id="goog_981419912"></span><span id="goog_981419913"></span><br />
the strings will be too high.<br />
<br />
lift the strings out 1 at a time and use a saw blade, (or you COULD use a really expensive set of nut files) to bring the slot down to the desired height. DON'T GO TOO LOW!!!! Note the bit of tape to stop the saw marking the headstock. DON'T ask why I found I needed to do this!! The slots need to slope down away from the fretboard a little so
that the highest point of the slot is where the string leaves the <span class="highlight">nut</span> on it's long trip to the bridge.<br />
<br />
finish the bottom of the slot with a cast off piece of wound string, just to buff it smooth.<br />
<br />
job done!!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e328/gowanedwards/40-49/46%20dread%20mando/40600991-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e328/gowanedwards/40-49/46%20dread%20mando/40600991-1.jpg" height="240" width="320"></a></div>
<br />
<br />
OK, OK, this is a third instrument, a mandolin!!<br />
<br />
you WILL stab yourself at least 17 times on the sharp string ends doing this.<br />
<br />
Oh yes.......Martinedwardshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08526228954020152254noreply@blogger.com38tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33911654.post-85779250492589412672013-02-02T11:19:00.001+00:002013-02-02T11:19:47.786+00:00Making a bone saddle for an acoustic guitarEVERYONE with an acoustic should have a bone nut & saddle, right?<br />
<br />
all righty, first carve (or sand) the top of the saddle to the curve you
want, about 1mm taller than you want (just copy the plastic one you're
replacing.)<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
These pics are from a doubleneck 6/12 string guitar I built a while back......<br />
<br />
<br />
click on the pics to enlarge.<br />
<br />
<br />
I've just noticed that the string spacing in these pics is a hair off,
its fine once things are straightened up and all is sorted.<br />
<br />
string it up with the gauge of string you'll be using.....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e328/gowanedwards/40600723.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e328/gowanedwards/40600723.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br /><br />Using an old string, make a temporary saddle and adjust it til the harmonic is the same note as the fretted 12 th fret note.<br /><br />your ears may be good, but a good digital tuner is better!! get a free download like AP tuner 3.06<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e328/gowanedwards/40600724.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e328/gowanedwards/40600724.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br /><br />mark on the soundhole side of the wire, repeat for each string.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e328/gowanedwards/40600725.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e328/gowanedwards/40600725.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e328/gowanedwards/40600726.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e328/gowanedwards/40600726.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e328/gowanedwards/40600728.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e328/gowanedwards/40600728.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />shade everything on the soundhole side<br /><br />file away all the pencil marked bone. then file in from the back to make each individual string support a dome rather than a flat on top<br />

<br />string it up again and you're done.......<br /><br />although you may want to lower the action a hair by sanding the BOTTOM of the saddle<br /><br />the theory is simple.<br />
<br />
Each string should be the scale length plus the diameter of the CORE.<br />
<br />
on unwound strings the core is all there is, but on wound strings it's the steel bit up the middle.<br />
<br />
making up the numbers it's roughly<br />
<br />
.011<br />
.016<br />
.011<br />
.016<br />
.020<br />
.028<br />
<br />
which explains the b string wiggle.......<br />
<br />
if you are fitting a piezo under the saddle then just sand the base to make the saddle shallower by the height of the piezo. <br />
<br />
personally, I'd always KEEP the original and make a new one, so I'd have the original if I ever removed the piezo again.<br />
<br />
have fun!!<br />
